Damning TV Special on Adelaide’s Dodgy Plumbers
A TV investigation this week highlighted the practices that some interstate unaccredited plumbers use to excessively charge for routine work, with high call-out fees and huge mark-ups.
Plumbers at these companies have even been instructed to avoid simple repairs and up-sell unnecessary and expensive replacement work.
These unaccredited firms have minimal supervision of their working practices & don’t abide by industry ethical codes or technical standards.
El Niño Drain Check for 2014
Current global weather pattern strongly suggest that a 2014/15 El Niño is due in Australia. This typically means Adelaide will experience low rainfall and higher temperatures.
Unusually for an El Niño year, the Bureau of Meteorology reports that there is currently a rare build up of cold water in the Eastern Indian Ocean. As a consequence, South Australia will receive unexpectedly high levels of rain over winter and early spring. Persistent and heavy rains will increase the risk of your drains blocking and your house flooding.
Sharpe Plumber Mark has been inspecting & repairing plumbing & drains in Adelaide for many years. Mark’s most frequently asked question.
Q: Why do my Drains Block? A: In many cases a lack of awareness regarding the need to care for drains leads to little maintenance. People forget about them and so small problems are allowed to develop into large ones.
Also consider that blockages are partly due to what’s in the drain rather than the drain itself. The hot fat and oil you pour down the sink can quickly solidify, contributing to reduced flow through your drains. I also regularly find nappies during inspections.
Signs and Symptoms: Drain Problems
- Heavy rain & organic matter can block your drains, pipework & guttering
- Low winter temperatures can result pipes in contracting & cracks appear
- Plants and weeds get into your drains through cracks and cause problems
- Pavers or concrete slabs in your garden started to become uneven or lift?
- Noticed stains, paint blisters or damp patches along walls or flooring?
If you notice any of these, contact Sharpe to inspect your system.
Only use a Plumbing Industry Association Member
Using an Accredited PIA Plumber ensures your plumbing is carried out by an experienced and ethical professional.
Guidelines set by the PIA on standards, codes of conduct and pricing , means the Public can be confident that work conducted to a best-practice level. If a plumber isn’t a PIA member, then they shouldn’t get your business.
Sharpe Accredited Plumber Mark advises residents of old houses to get their drains regularly checked.
A large percentage of the older homes he inspects have issues relating to the age of drains. This is due to many being made from earthenware or ceramic pipes, which over time crack and become susceptible to tree or shrub roots entering .
You should act before this happens, as once blockages develop; it will become a recurring issue without a major repair.
Requesting a Drain Camera is a Clever Investment
Asking for a Drain Camera investigation can save time, money and improve the accuracy of any inspection.
Drain Cameras allow our plumbers to observe hard to reach areas, impossible to accurately examine without removing sections of your plumbing.
It allows is to find the exact location of a problem, and so we can repair minor problems before they transform into anything more serious.
