Be Hot-Water Wise: Hot Water System Service

WINTER is the worst time to have your hot water fail and become a crisis for the whole household.
“Regular servicing is cheap peace of mind,” Sharpe Group spokesman David Sharpe says. His long-established plumbing and electrical business services and repairs all types of hot water systems across Adelaide.
“Traditional water heating such as electric, gas and solar systems, and the latest technology heat-pumps require a specialist technician to maintain and repair,” he says. “Having said that, there are basic steps householders can take to ensure peak efficiency.” Mr Sharpe suggests keeping a simple maintenance log of regular visual inspections for leaks and whether the storage cylinder’s overflow is excessive.
“Compare power bills season by season,” he adds. “A spike in costs could indicate a problem.” Every year a licensed specialist should service the whole system. This could take up to an hour and involve draining the water heater to flush any sediment build-up. Most storage-based electric systems contain a sacrificial anode, attracting corroding minerals and impurities. It should be replaced at least every five years. “This is one of the most important maintenance tasks,” Mr Sharpe says. “It can add many years to the life of a hot water system.” Sharpe Group also services solar hot water, including evacuated tube and flat panel systems, as well as heat pumps. “If your old water heater fails, it might be a good time to weigh up the pros and cons of a direct replacement or a whole new system involving solar options,” Mr Sharpe says. “Our specialists can advise and assist with all aspects of hot water servicing, repair and replacement. “Remember, money spent booking a professional service is money saved on your utility bill.”
