Dig up the dirt on airconditioner

Air Conditioner BURNOUT a SAFETY ISSUE
ASK THE EXPERT
Q1: What happened here?
Answer: We got a call when the air-conditioner in this northern suburbs family home stopped working. We found wiring had caught fire because cabling was crushed behind the inspection cover. It could have been a bad original installation or clumsy work by a service technician. Either way regular inspection & testing would have picked this up long before the heat of summer. This young family was lucky. If there had been leaves & debris behind the cover it could have resulted in a house fire.
Q2: That would have been a real disaster?
A: Every summer the same thing happens. A major building fire is sparked by a faulty air-conditioning unit and fire authorities issue another warning about the importance of regular checks and servicing of household cooling systems. Another important consideration is ensuring that your reverse-cycle is wired into the appropriate switchboard circuit to prevent electrical overload.
Q3: Air-conditioners are pretty reliable aren’t they?
A: They are. Current-technology reverse-cycle cooling-heating systems are durable, quieter running and more energy efficient. But they need regular servicing to ensure all components are safely running within factory specifications.
Q4: So how did this job end up?
A: We can usually repair broken air-conditioners but with so much burnt wiring a new unit was required. We have a comprehensive range of replacement options so the owners got the best unit for their situation.
